Headband — A Song For Tooley 1973 (Australia, Progressive Rock)

Headband was formed in February 1971 in Adelaide with the following lineup: Chris Bailey (ex-Red Angel Panic, bass guitar), Joff Bateman (ex-Resurrection, W.G. Berg, War Machine, drums), Peter Beagley (ex-Johnny Mac And The Macmen, Peter Beagley Trio, Boz, keyboards), and Mauri Berg (ex-Silhouettes, Ides Of March, Resurrection, W.G. Berg, War Machine, guitar, harmonica, and lead vocals). They were managed by Hamish Henry, a young millionaire entrepreneur and car dealer who also managed Fraternity featuring Bon Scott. The band released three singles before deciding to record a full-length album. "A Song For Tooley" was released in September 1973 on Polydor. The album is diverse and covers a wide range of styles. At times, it veers toward Uriah Heep-inspired performances, prog-jazz influences, or heavy psychedelia. Take, for example, the psalm "My Young Friend," accompanied by piano and a 116-piece children's choir. Keyboardist Peter Beagley explains that the band members had to adapt to the audience and play a wide variety of programs. Preparing the material even included attending chamber music concerts together. This is reflected in the final track, "Goodbye Mother Nature," a stripped-down prog-rock étude recorded with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. After the band's breakup in 1974, Chris Bailey joined the Australian rock band The Angels and later became a founding member of GANGgajang. Mauri Berg joined Fraternity later that year, and Peter Beagley formed The Mount Lofty Rangers.

Tracks:

01. A Song For Tooley - 0:00

02.
