Gelnhausen has a rich history. It was founded in 1170 by Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa as an imperial city. Ten years later, in 1180, he held an important imperial diet here, during which he brought a lawsuit against his cousin Henry the Lion.<br />If you look closely while strolling through the city today, you will discover various works of art that remind you of the city's past and how people used to live here.
