Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton attended its first callout of 2026 on Sunday January 11.
The team was called at 17:00 to assist a female walker who had fallen and sustained a suspected lower leg fracture on the upper slopes of Haytor Rocks. As it was dark, a gale blowing and raining heavily the team were quickly mobilised.

First on scene was an @BASICS_Devon doctor. A small foot team was initially deployed to confirm the doctor and casualty’s location and provide shelter until the remainder of the team arrived with more equipment. Following medical assessment by the BASICS doctor the casualty was provided pain relief and her leg splinted. After some challenging off road driving the team landrover arrived at the site. The woman was then loaded into the team landrover and driven carefully back to the car park and waiting land ambulance.

Dartmoor Search and Rescue Ashburton Team Leader Craig Scollick said ‘Although a relatively short callout the darkness, gale force wind and heavy rain made this a challenging one. It is a testament to our volunteers and their training enabling them to perform so well in these conditions’.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

17 of our volunteers were involved in this incident.

The team stood down at 18:30.
