フィリピンにしかない乗り物といえば「ジプニー」。単にジープと呼ばれることのほうが多い。エアコンを利かした大型のジプニーもマカティ市あたりでは見かける。ベンツのフロントグリルをつけ、ホイールキャプはトヨタ、そして泥除けはアメ車と、ありあわせのもので作られる派手な外見、そしてジーゼルエンジンのけたたましい排気音と真っ黒い排ガス。この乗り物は米軍が戦後に放出した「ウィリージープ」と呼ばれる軍用ジープを、座席部分を伸ばして屋根をつけるなどして改良したものだ。戦後の物不足、運搬手段が失われた中で、フィリピン人の手先の器用さがこの奇怪ともいえるジプニーを生み出したのだ。とはいっても1950年代の古い写真に出てくるジプニーは現在のものとは幾分か違っている。車体が短いのだ。それもそのはず、軍用ジープの運転席の後部は通常4人掛けだったからだ。時代が下るにつれてジプニーの車体はだんだんと長くなってきたようにも思える。都市部では最近、派手さがなくなりブリキやステンレス丸出しの実用向きもあるが、首都圏近郊のアンティポロ市やリサール州などに行けば、いまだにこの派手な装飾のデコ・ジプニーに出会うことができる。どこでも停車してくれるジプニーは都市部での交通渋滞の一因となっているが、当地でジプニーに乗りなれた日本人の中には、日本に帰るとジプニーがないため、この便利さをとても懐かしく感じる人もいるとか。 <br /><br />(For Non-Japanese Viewers) <br />When you watch the video, please click the Gear icon "⚙ "in the top-right corner of the screen to access the subtitle options, then select your language if available. <br /><br />When it comes to vehicles unique to the Philippines, there's the “jeepney.” More commonly, it's simply called a jeep. You can even spot large, air-conditioned jeepneys around Makati City. They sport flashy exteriors cobbled together from whatever parts are available: a Mercedes-Benz front grille, Toyota wheel caps, and American car mudguards. Then there's the diesel engine's raucous exhaust note and thick black fumes. This vehicle evolved from military Jeeps known as “Willys Jeeps,” discarded by the U.S. military after the war. Filipinos modified them by extending the seating area and adding roofs. Amid post-war shortages and the loss of transportation means, Filipino ingenuity gave birth to these bizarre-looking jeepneys. That said, jeepneys in old photos from the 1950s look somewhat different from today's versions. Their bodies were shorter. This makes sense, as the rear of the military jeep's cab typically seated four people. Over time, the jeepney body seems to have gradually lengthened. In urban areas, some practical models now lack flashiness, featuring exposed tin or stainless steel. However, in places like Antipolo City or Rizal Province near the capital region, you can still encounter these elaborately decorated Deco Jeepneys. While jeepneys stopping anywhere contribute to urban traffic congestion, some Japanese who grew accustomed to riding them locally reportedly feel nostalgic for this convenience upon returning to Japan, where such vehicles are absent.
