Macy’s has begun closing U.S. stores as part of a 150-location retrenchment, a shift with employment and mall-traffic implications.<br />The first 14 Macy’s store closures in Q1 2026 span ten states, with liquidation sales launched in mid-January and final shutdowns expected in roughly 10 weeks.<br />Confirmed Macy’s layoffs include 1,050 roles at Connecticut fulfillment centers and 89 at New Jersey stores, with thousands more potentially affected as locations wind down.<br />The “Bold New Chapter” plan announced in February 2024 exits underperforming sites, reinvests in 350 stronger stores, and expands digital operations.<br />By late 2025, 66 stores were closed.<br />Macy’s is emphasizing 125 “Reimagine” locations and growth at Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury amid wider U.S. retail consolidation.
