Norwegian archaeologists documented a 1,500-year-old wooden mass-capture reindeer hunting facility emerging from melting ice on Aurlandsfjellet, underscoring exceptional preservation and research value. The University Museum of Bergen identified a funnel of parallel wooden fences, a rare Iron Age reindeer hunting system revealed by glacial archaeology in Norway.

First spotted by mountaineer Helge Titland and excavated after a year’s weather delay, the site yielded antlers with cut marks and iron weaponry, plus complete bows and carved tools. Researchers note selective harvesting, unusually preserved wood and bone, and a decorated wooden oar found far below the main site. The facility was likely abandoned around 500 CE and preserved in ice; modern warming is exposing it, and it was named Find of the Year in November 2024.
