The global carbon pricing initiative faced postponement, leading many to anticipate a slowdown in the shipping sector. However, the opposite occurred. In spite of political challenges and uncertainty surrounding a $380-per-ton carbon tax, the largest shipping firms are persisting in their investment of billions into eco-friendly ships and alternative energy sources. More than $150 billion has been allocated for dual-fuel vessels, and currently, 74% of new container ship contracts are for ships capable of utilizing cleaner energy options such as LNG, methanol, and ammonia. While several sectors are retracting on environmental objectives, shipping continues to advance — propelled by long-term planning, European regulations, and the worldwide ambition for net zero by 2050. Could this signal the dawn of a genuine green revolution in maritime operations?
