ULTRA-RARE ALBINO SQUIRREL SPOTTED DURING SNOWSTORM
WITH PIX AND VID
By Shuk Yee Tsang
A rare albino squirrel was captured making a sharp, snake-like call during a sudden snowstorm.
Amateur wildlife photographer John House, 65, from Nova Scotia, Canada, filmed the moment of a female squirrel sat in a tree enduring the harsh weather before reacting to a nearby rival.
The footage shows the squirrel chattering loudly, a behaviour triggered when another squirrel caught her attention.
The vocalisation is a territorial warning rather than aggression, a way of claiming space without escalating into a fight.
John has been following the squirrel since she first emerged from her drey in spring 2025 and has closely documented her development.
Albino red squirrels are extremely rare and face significant challenges in the wild, including poor eyesight and increased visibility to predators.
John explained “The late winter snowstorm came up suddenly, and the squirrel was resting in the tree when it began.
“She was sitting there trying to tolerate the weather when another nearby squirrel caught her attention, which prompted her chattering.
“It is impressive that she has survived, and now could be entering her first breeding season.”
Viewers were captivated by the footage, with one commenting: “Oh poor sweetheart, it does NOT like the snowstorm.”
Another added: “That little guy is so adorable, thank you for sharing this!”
A third viewer said: " What Pokémon is that, yo?"
END
