A highly mutated COVID variant known as “Cicada” is spreading across multiple states in the U.S., and health experts are keeping a close watch. This new strain, scientifically called BA.3.2, has around 75 mutations on its spike protein — the part of the virus our immune system usually recognizes.<br /><br />Because of these mutations, the variant may be better at evading immunity from previous infections or vaccines. While COVID cases remain relatively low overall, Cicada has already been detected in at least 25 states and several countries around the world.<br /><br />The symptoms are similar to other COVID variants and may include runny or stuffy nose, fever, headache, fatigue, sneezing, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and changes in smell or taste. Some cases have also reported a severe sore throat often described as “razorblade throat.”<br /><br />At this stage, there is no clear evidence that the Cicada variant causes more severe illness. However, scientists are closely monitoring its spread and studying how it interacts with current vaccines.<br /><br />Most people recover at home with rest and basic treatment.
