DIVER ENCOUNTERS RARE DIAMONDBACK SQUID EGG MASS
WITH VID
BY SALONI MATHUR
Simone Mainetti, a scuba diving instructor from Queensland, Australia, came across something very rare.
On a regular dive, Simone encountered a rare mass of Diamondback squid eggs, floating in the Atlantic Ocean.
The egg mass often looks like a long, glassy pinkish ribbon or cylinder drifting underwater.
Inside the clear jelly are thousands of tiny eggs arranged in neat rows, giving it a dotted or honeycomb-like appearance.
Simone said: “In this video, you can see me approaching the egg mass and trying to capture it from different angles.
“There are only 108 confirmed sightings documented in the last 200 years.
“Diamondback squid spend their entire lives in the deep ocean.
“And like many squid, the Diamondback reproduces once in its lifetime and dies soon after.
“This sighting is a rare bridge between the mysterious deep-sea world and our world on the surface.”
ENDS
