Richard Shirreff, a former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander of NATO, has cautioned that China might take advantage of US military commitments in the Middle East to launch an invasion of Taiwan, thus triggering a global conflict among major nuclear nations. Analysts have pinpointed eight US states that host key strategic nuclear command facilities as primary targets for a Russian first strike in any significant escalation event.
