One bazooka. One telephone pole for cover. Three tanks closing in at thirty yards.<br /><br />D-Day, four in the afternoon. Most of the company had already pulled back. Two guys from the 505th PIR stayed at La Fière Bridge with a tube full of rockets and nowhere to run. The causeway was straight, the marsh was flooded on both sides, and two hundred German infantry were walking right behind those tanks.<br /><br />What happened in the next four minutes broke every rule the Army ever wrote about how bazooka teams are supposed to fight. What happened after they ran out of rockets — that part is harder to believe.<br /><br />One of them made a decision that should have killed him on the spot. It didn't. And it changed everything.<br /><br />The Army's own historian called this bridge "probably the bloodiest small unit struggle in the experience of American arms."
