The concept of Christ has very much been privatized in the west. The Buddha in the east means very much the same thing. Only here it is an ideal all can aspire to. It was (among others) C.G. Jung who re-discovered that the Christ-archetype is also embedded in the depths of the person's psyche in terms of what he called the Self-archetype. The way of the cross is the painful and narrow and cramped road toward this inner resurrection of the Self in us.
