Militants exchanged fire with security personnel in Indian Kashmir over the weekend. The shootout began on Saturday evening and lasted through Sunday.<br /><br />[Abdul Qayoom Manhas, Deputy Inspector General]: <br />"We received information from our sources that in the new colony Sopore, some militants are holed up. Immediately, we cordoned off the house but the militants escaped to the adjoining houses so we cordoned off all the houses in the vicinity." <br /><br />Police made no arrests and are looking for militants who may have fled during the encounter.<br /><br />Search operations in the area uncovered arms and ammunition from the house, which they say belongs to the battalion commander of the militant outfit Harkal-ul-Mujahideen.<br /><br />Kashmir is the core dispute between Pakistan and India, and the cause of two of their three wars since their independence from British rule in 1947.
