Pond scum may just turn out to be an ultimate solution to renewable energy. Algae is among the fastest growing plant species in the world. About 50 percent of their weight is oil. That oil can be used to make biodiesel fuel for cars, trucks and airplanes. Using algae as an alternative fuel is not a new idea. The U.S. Dept of Energy has studied it for years as a potential new resource. With today's high cost of fuel, the government and the private sector are aggressively researching the benefits of algae oil.
