A massive landslide sweeps through a town in China's northwestern Gansu Province, killing over 100 and leaving 1,300 missing. Buildings are swallowed in mud, making any rescue attempts difficult.<br />Mudslides battered northwest China on Sunday, killing 127 people with at least 1,300 missing so far.<br /><br />The mudslides and flooding resulted from torrential rain that hit Zhouqu County in Gansu Province on Saturday, an area dominated by steep and barren hills.<br /><br />Runoff from the downpour banked up behind a landslide in the narrow valley of the Bailong River near the main town in Zhouqu.<br /><br />Buildings and streets are deep in mud and other parts of the town are submerged in floodwater.<br /><br />The town's hydroelectric station was smashed during the mudslide, leaving the area without electricity.<br /><br />In China, more than 1,400 people have been killed this year in floods that have devastated the country's central and southern regions.
