<p><br /> Conservation officials discovered a pod of more than 70 pilot whales stranded on New Zealand's Kaitaia Beach on Friday.<br /> </p><p><br /> Almost sixty of the mammals have already died, accoding to local media.<br /> </p><p><br /> Volunteers and conservationists are working around the clock to save the creatures that remain alive. Officials said rainy weather has helped their efforts.<br /> </p><p><br /> As each of the mammals weigh around 1.5 tonnes, heavy machinery will be brought in on Saturday to try move the whales back to sea.<br /> </p><p><br /> It's the second such incidence in recent history, more than 100 whales were stranded on the same beach in 2007.<br /> </p>
