<p><br /> The annual tomato throwing festival 'Tomatina' or tomato fight has kicked off in Bunol, Spain.<br /> </p><p><br /> Thousands of revelers descended on the small provincial town to play around inside tomato pulp.<br /> </p><p><br /> The festival originates back to 1945, and is a big part of the town's annual event calendar. It takes place place on the last Wednesday of every August.<br /> </p><p><br /> The concept behind the tomatina does not seem to be based on religious or cultural grounds, more of an opportunity for thousands of people to throw over-ripe tomatoes at each other, blow off some steam and have fun as summer draws to an end.<br /> </p><p><br /> It is estimated that around 20,000 -500,000 tourists descend on the town each year to attend the week long event.<br /> </p>
