After four hundred years Mount Sinabung has erupted.<br /><br />The volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra is sending smoke about 1,500 meters or 5,000 feet into the air.<br /><br />Indonesian officials have put the volcano on red alert.<br /><br />[Surono, Head of Volcanology Center]: <br />"This is the first time in history since 1600 that Sinabung erupted and we have little knowledge about it."<br /><br />Authorities evacuated at least 12,000 people from high risk areas to temporary shelters.<br /><br />So far the volcano has not injured anyone or affected aviation. <br /><br />Sinabung began erupting late at night after several days of rumbling.<br /><br />Indoneisa is on the so-called Pacific Rim of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and geological fault lines surrounding the Pacific Basin.
