Dozens of people in Mexico City spent Friday preparing a record breaking super taco.

The 134 foot long snack set a new record for the longest taco ever prepared in the country.

The record attempt took place in Plaza Garibaldi, an outdoor nightspot in the heart of Mexico City.

Local authorities and 38 local businesses helped prepare the popular dish as a way to preserve Mexican culture.

[Marco Antonio Ginea, Restaurant Owner]:
"We try to preserve our culture and roots. That's why we are carrying out this festival and that's why we're trying to make the largest taco in Mexico -- made in Mexico."

Thousands of pieces of pork, pineapple, coriander, onion, beef, chicken, beans, cheese, cream, and rice, as well as other ingredients, were mixed in to create the taco.

[Rosario, Festival Visitor]:
"It's a tradition in Mexico. We eat tacos and our roots came from corn and it's delicious."

The long taco challenge kicks off a 10-day festival aimed at cleaning up Plaza Garibaldi, which is famed for raucous open-air drinking and folk music. City officials want to clean it up and add a dose of sophistication.

The city and federal governments plan to spend around $6 million sprucing up Garibaldi. Musicians and hawkers hope the renovation will bring them more business.

The first phase, including building a new tequila museum, is to be completed by November, when Mexico will celebrate 200 years of independence -- likely with boisterous round-the-clock partying at city squares like Garibaldi.
