Japan Arrests Chinese Boat Captain off Disputed Isles

Japanese officials have arrested the captain of a Chinese fishing vessel on the East China Sea. The vessel was anchored near a group of East China Sea islets which are claimed by Tokyo, Beijing and Taiwan.<br /><br />On Wednesday, Japan arrested the captain of a Chinese fishing boat that collided with two Japanese coast guard boats near the disputed islets in the East China Sea.<br /><br />Japan's top government spokesman explained the arrest at a news conference.<br /><br />"The Japanese Coast Guard issued an arrest warrant to the captain of the Chinese vessel anchored nine kilometers north of Uozuri islands on September 8th for obstructing the performance of a public duty."<br /><br />The incident took place near a group of East China Sea islets – called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu Island in China. Tokyo, Beijing and Taiwan each claim the islands as their own.<br /><br />A spokesman from Japan’s coast guard says that no one was injured during the arrest.<br /><br />He added the captain of the Chinese boat has been transported to the southern Japanese island of Ishigaki for questioning.
