Army called in as Games chief promises great event

<p><br /> The Indian Army has started construction of a new footbridge near the main stadium for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, after an under-construction bridge at the site collapsed few days back.<br /> </p><p><br /> The construction work is in full swing ahead of the Commonwealth Games' Opening Ceremony on October 3.<br /> </p><p><br /> The footbridge opposite Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium collapsed on Tuesday, injuring at least 23 labourers and highlighting fears of shoddy workmanship after severe criticism about the facilities for athletes.<br /> </p><p><br /> Amid the perceived 'negative' media campaign, Suresh Kalmadi, chief of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC), has taken journalists on an extensive tour of the Games Village in New Delhi.<br /> </p><p><br /> The CGOC chief said: "We went and really bid for it, we met many people and finally got the Games. At that time I had said I will give you very good Games, and that promise is there, we will give you good Games,"<br /> </p><p><br /> The multi-sport event which has cost India between $3-6 billion was supposed to showcase the country's rising economic and political clout, but infrastructure failures, corruption scandals and security concerns have threatened to turn the event into a farce.<br /> </p>
