However, tests indicate that the virus has not spread beyond chickens.<br /><br />On Friday, Japan's farm ministry confirmed the country's first outbreak of H5N1 bird flu since 2007.<br /><br />The highly pathogenic strain was found on a poultry farm in western Japan.<br /><br />Chickens which died on the farm in western Japan this week had the H5N1 strain, which is a higher-risk version of the virus last found in poultry in central Japan back in 2009.<br /><br />[Eiji Ishigaki, Section Chief Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries]: <br />"We have confirmed that this is a strain of highly-pathogenic avian influenza."<br /><br />The farm, in Shimane Prefecture, keeps about 20-thousand hens for their eggs. All the hens have been culled and will be burned and buried.<br /><br />The ministry says that tests on four poultry farms within a six mile radius of the affected farm were negative, and the farms will resume shipping eggs on Friday.
