The tragedy occuured near the Cameron Highlands, one of Malaysia's most extensive hill stations.<br /><br />A Malaysian tour bus carrying mostly Thai tourists hits a road divider, overturning near Malaysia's Cameron Highlands, killing at least 26 people—according to state news agency Bernama's reporting on Monday (December 20). <br /><br />Local media report deputy police chief of Malaysia's northern Perak State, Zakaria Yusof, saying the driver lost control of the vehicle as it was descending from Cameron Highlands. <br /><br />The highlands are a popular hill resort in the northwest of Pahang State, about 124 miles from Kuala Lumpur. <br /><br />37 Thai tourists were traveling on the bus, en route to Kuala Lumpur, where the tourists were scheduled to fly back to Bangkok. <br /><br />Zakaria says 22 of the victims died on the spot right after the accident—happening at 11:40 a.m .(0340 GMT)—while 4 others died while on their way to hospital. <br /><br />About 100 rescue personnel arrive at the scene, helping another 11 injured to reach a nearby hospital in Ipoh for treatment. <br /><br />The names of the dead have yet to be released. <br /><br />Local media reports a Tourism Malaysia source saying the double-decker bus belonged to San Express Holiday which is registered in Perak. <br /><br />Malaysia has the highest rate of road traffic fatalities in Southeast Asia, with around 23 deaths per 100-thousand people in 2009, according to a World Health Organization study.
