It will be a tough battle for Buhari as he competes for the presidential seat in April's election.<br /><br />Nigeria's former military head of state Mohammadu Buhari has been declared Presidential candidate by the opposition Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) party on Tuesday.<br /><br />In his nomination acceptance speech in Abuja, Buhari says he is the candidate who offers change.<br /><br />[Mohammadu Buhari, Ex-Military Ruler, Presidential Candidate]:<br />"Our job today is to resolve to defeat the PDP in all the elections coming up shortly. After a dozen years of bad governance Nigerians deserve a change. We are offering the change."<br /><br />Buhari faces a tough challenge, with Nigerian presidential politics dominated by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<br /><br />Buhari has developed a reputation as an anti-corruption figure, but was also accused of human rights violations following a coup on New Year's Eve in 1983.<br /><br />Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is waging a tough battle ahead of the presidential primaries in two weeks time. The outcome will have far-reaching consequences, from security in the Niger Delta to the passage of legislation to overhaul the oil industry, as well as multi-billion dollar plans to privatize the power sector.<br /><br />The electoral commission has set presidential elections for April 9, 2011, with parliamentary polls a week before and state governorship elections a week after.
