8 April 2011: Huge upset today at Margaret River at the Telstra Drug Aware Pro with 21 year old emerging Kiwi surfing star Billy Stairmand defeating 10X world champion Kelly Slater.<br /><br /><br />Stairmand set the win up mid heat when he took off on one of the bigger waves of the heat, belted two extremely committed backhand critical top-to-bottom turns and posted an outstanding 9 point ride.<br /><br /><br />Slater tried to take the heat late with an excellent 8 point ride but was unable to overtake Stairmand.<br /><br /><br />Stairmand moved through to the final 12 surfers in the event while Slater was eliminated.<br /><br /><br />Australia's Mick Fanning was also extremely impressive today defeating another emerging NZ surfer in Richard Christie to also move through to the final 12 surfers.
