The destructive twister struck just after 3 pm local time just as children were set to go home from school.<br /><br />A tornado left a trail of destruction in New Zealand's largest city of Auckland on Tuesday, leaving one dead and more than a dozen injured.<br /><br />The tornado struck the suburb of Albany north of central Auckland, at about 3 p.m. local time with damage centered on the local shopping mall, before it moved south leaving a three mile trail of destruction in its wake.<br /><br />Police say at least one person was killed and more than a dozen injured.<br /><br />Eyewitnesses say they were terrified by the twister that wreaked havoc on the city.<br /><br />[Unidentified Local Resident]:<br />"I have never seen one in my life, they're so scary in real life."<br /><br />Deadly tornadoes swept across the southern U.S. last week, killing more than 350 people and causing as much as $5 billion of damage.<br /><br />New Zealand experiences about 20 tornadoes a year, however most are of a relatively small scale, and fatalities are rare.<br /><br />The worst tornado in New Zealand struck the city of Hamilton in 1948, killing three people, injuring 80 and destroying nearly 200 buildings.<br /><br />In 2004 a tornado struck a small town in the Taranaki region, killing two people.
