The endangered bird is an offspring of a North Island Brown Kiwi.<br /><br />A rare white kiwi made its first media appearance on Tuesday, after it hatched at the Pukaha Mount Bruce National Wildlife Centre near Wellington on May 1st.<br /><br />The kiwi is a flightless bird native to New Zealand and is the country's national symbol.<br /><br />The small bird has been named 'Manukura' by Maori elders.<br /><br />Manukura is not an albino but a rare offspring of a North Island Brown Kiwi.<br /><br />It's being hand-reared by Department of Conservation officers for four to six months, and is being fed a diet of minced meat and vegetables.<br /><br />According to Birdlife International, the North Island Brown Kiwi is endangered.<br /><br />The current population of 38,400 has decreased by as much as 86 percent over the past 36 years, due to predators and loss of habitat.
