The decision comes after a controversy that has shaken the state run charitable organization's reputation.

The Guo Meimei scandal—one of China's Red Cross' senior members, Wang Jun, engaged in an affair with a woman calling herself Guo Meimei. Two weeks ago, she posted pictures of her extravagant lifestyle—posing by a Maserati, flaunting expensive handbags, sipping drinks in business class. Netizens erupted into a fury, claiming that her opulent lifestyle was the result of corruption and misappropriation of Red Cross funds, first by her and later by her high-ranking boyfriend.

China's Red Cross and Guo Meimei have denied any connection. But with no public records of where donations were going, people were suspicious.

Star tennis player Li Na, who recently won the French Open, has turned against the organization. According to the state-run People's Daily, Li was planning on donating $77,000 to a home for the elderly, disabled, and orphans of her hometown in Wuhan. She now plans to handle the donation herself, without going through China Red Cross.

In response to the scandal, the state-run charitable organization announced on Thursday that it will start making public the donations it has received, and where that money is going.
