Tropical Storm Roke batters Japan

Flooding in Japan's northern Miyagi Prefecture, caused by Typhoon Roke on Wednesday.<br/> The typhoon has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.<br/> According to a national broadcaster, ten people are so far confirmed dead and five still missing following the heavy rains and ferocious winds whipped up by the typhoon.<br/> In Tokyo, millions of commuters were left stranded as nearly all public transport stopped.<br/> In northern parts of the country, still struggling to recover from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disaster, some of the evacuees' temporary homes were flooded.<br/> The typhoon battered the crippled nuclear facilities at Fukushima, but according to TEPCO did not damage the already weakened reactors or threaten the surrounding environment further.<br/> Tropical storm Roke is pounding Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido before heading out to sea once again.<br/> Nick Rowlands, Reuters.
