Afghans take to the streets of the northeastern town of Badakhshan to protest the death of former President and peace council head, Burhanuddin Rabbani.
Residents of Rabbani's home town are furious that he was killed by a Taliban suicide bomber in Kabul on Tuesday.
(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) SEBGHATULLAH, RESIDENT OF BADAKHSHAN:
"We will stand bravely against the enemies of Ustad Rabbani because Rabbani was not a bad person and we are not afraid of the enemies of our country. We will take revenge."
A demonstration also took place in the Afghan capital, with protesters carrying posters of Rabbani and chanting, "God is great!"
Charged with heading negotiations with the Taliban, Rabbani's assassination is a dramatic show of insurgent reach, and a strong statement of Taliban opposition to peace talks.
(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) PROTESTER, AFGHAN HAYATULLAH:
"We came to express our condemnation of the enemies of peace and stability, the enemies of our country and government. We condemn the assassination of our Jihad and resistance leader."
Rabbani was a prominent Tajik - the second largest ethnic group in Afghanistan - and it's possible his death will exacerbate ethnic divides.
A police source said a senior advisor to President Hamid Karzai was also injured in the attack, which is the highest profile assassination in Afghanistan since the President's half-brother was killed at home by a trusted security guard in July.
Nick Rowlands, Reuters.
