A US diplomatic cable recently released by WikiLeaks details Taiwan's vice president revealing some of Mr. Ma's second term goals for Taiwan's political relationship with the Mainland.

If elected to a second term, Taiwan's president, Ma Ying-jeou, would seek, "a peace treaty, a formal end to hostilities, and the development of bilateral military confidence mechanisms" with the CCP regime in China. This is according to a US diplomatic cable published recently on WikiLeaks. It details commentary on the issue from Taiwan's vice president, Vincent Siew.

According to the leaked cable, the pursuit of some sort of peace treaty would be the next phase in President Ma's plan to build closer cross-straight relations with the Mainland.

Mr. Siew acknowledged in the cable that the pursuit of a treaty with the Chinese regime by the Ma government would be a "highly political" endeavor, and would likely be met with strong resistance from the opposition DPP party and from a large segment of society.

[...]

The Chinese regime has maintained that the island nation is still part of China, and has threatened military action if Taiwan tries to formalize its status as an independent country.

President Ma has previously said that the CCP regime must remove the roughly 13,000 missiles it has targeting Taiwan before he would be willing to re-open diplomatic talks. In the cable published on WikiLeaks, Vice President Siew does not mention that condition.

Beijing was recently angered by a US decision to upgrade Taiwan's fleet of aging F-16 fighter jets.

The United States is treaty-bound to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese regime attack.
