Transport strikes cripple Athens

Traffic jams in the Greek capital Athens.
Transport workers have staged their sixth strike in two weeks, opposed to wage reductions and possible job losses due to a government austerity package.
Metro stations are closed, tram platforms empty, and buses remain idle in their stations.
Yet despite the congestion, many residents are sympathetic when asked if the stoppages are a hassle.
(SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ATHENS RESIDENT CONSTANTINOS:
"A bit. But we can walk a bit, it's not a problem. Everyone has a right to strike, so when they strike we have to walk."
(SOUNDBITE) (Greek) ANOTHER RESIDENT CONSTANTINOS BOUKIS:
"It's worth it, isn't it? I mean what else does Europe want from us anyway? Whatever they do we will never become India or Pakistan. Greeks have suffered a lot."
Rubbish is also piling up in the capital, with municipal workers on strike since October 5th, the day of a general strike by civil servants.
The strikes come as EU, IMF, and European Central Bank heads meet with the Greek Finance Minister to discuss an aid package.
Without the new eight billion euro aid installment, Athens could run out of cash as early as mid-November.
Nick Rowlands, Reuters.
