A spokesman for Wal-Mart denied that Chan's departure is connected to the recent pork labeling scandal in Chongqing, where tons of conventional pork had been mislabeled organic.

The public reaction to the mislabeling has somewhat tarnished Wal-Mart's image with Chinese consumers, who reacted sharply to the news as the most recent in a long string of food scandals that have eroded confidence in the CCP regime's ability to ensure food safety.

Wal-Mart is cooperating with an ongoing investigation into the mislabeled pork incident. Chan's post will be temporarily filled by Wal-Mart Asia president Scott Price.
