A memorial ceremony has taken place at York Minster to honour all the French servicemen who gave their lives flying alongside Bomber Command in the Second World War.<br /><br />Two Squadrons of volunteers were based at Elvington air base in 1944 and 1945, but they lost half their men flying raids over Germany.<br /><br />On Wednesday a small service was held at the memorial to the French in Elvington village.<br /><br />Around 1500 people gathered at York Minster where a memorial stone was dedicated, the first of its kind in a British cathedral.<br /><br />At lunchtime there was a parade and a fly past of more than twenty British and French aircraft including some which have recently returned from Libya.
