Students take college exams

2011-11-10 1 Dailymotion

Its one of the most stressful times for teens, college entrance exam test day.
But for students in South Korea, it's so much more.
The state sponsored College Scholastic Aptitude Test, or Su Neung (su-NUNG) for short, holds great weight in Korean society... only half of the more than 700,000 students taking the test will get accepted into what are considered 'prestigious' universities.
Test day in Seoul is an event unto itself... Younger students stand outside test centers to cheer on their schoolmates.
Some get police escorts who fear they might miss the start of the test.
Parents, teary eyed and proud, wish their children the best.
(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) 49-YEAR-OLD FATHER OF A STUDENT, SAYING:
"She's been through a tough time with it. I hope she gets the best result as she studied very hard. Thank you."
Other family members spend the day at church or temple, praying for their children's success.
But all the prayers in the world won't help calm a nervous student... one consolation... students unhappy with their results, can retake the test as many times as they want.
Julie Noce, Reuters
