Australian police have arrested a man in connection with a deadly fire at a nursing home in a suburb outside Sydney.
The man who worked as a nurse at the home, appeared before a judge Saturday morning and has been charged with four counts of murder.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) COMMANDER, HOMICIDE SQUAD, DETECTIVE SUPERINTENDENT MICHAEL WILLING, SAYING:
"The male is an employee of the nursing home." (UNSEEN REPORTER ASKS: What can you tell us about him?) "Look, at this point, the matter's before the court, and as you can imagine, I'm quite restricted in what I can say. But all I can say is that last night, detectives were speaking to the man at Mount Druitt police station where they formed the opinion that they had sufficient evidence to place him under arrest. They did so, and at the conclusion of an interview he was charged with four counts of murder."
Friday, as police and rescuers attended to the scene of the fire, the suspect 35-year-old Roger Dean, gave an interview to local media.
SOUNDBITE) (English) CHARGED WITH MURDER BY POLICE, NURSE, ROGER DEAN, SAYING:
"...Just there was a fire, and I just quickly, just did what I can to get everyone out. The smoke is just overwhelming, but, you know, we got a lot of people out, so that's the main thing." (UNSEEN REPORTER ASKS: They're saying that there's still people unaccounted for, what's happening there?) "I'm not sure. The deputy, she's got the list of people there, and yeah, it looks like there's still probably a few people, and the people are trying their best to get everyone out at the moment. Yeah."
Five people have died from injuries sustained in the fire.
Dean is set to appear in court again next week.
Julie Noce, Reuters
