Philippines activists demand Arroyo conviction

2011-11-22 19 Dailymotion

Activists protest in front of the Supreme Court in Manila - calling for former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo to be held accountable for alleged vote rigging in 2007 elections.
Arroyo was arrested inside her hospital room on Friday, after a court issued a warrant - citing her alleged involvement in the poll rigging.
Here in the capital, these demonstrators block traffic, as they urge the court to throw out Arroyo's petition to dismiss the case filed against her.
(SOUNDBITE) (Filipino) PROTESTER JOE DIZON, SAYING:
"She must not escape. The Supreme Court, which is meeting right now, should be the instrument of accountability and not an instrument for her escape."
Arroyo has denied the allegations against her - and says she needs to travel to seek medical treatment for a spine condition.
But the government believes she wants to evade investigation and possible prosecution.
The alleged vote rigging happened in the restive predominantly Muslim South, where all 12 pro-Arroyo senate candidates won a clean sweep in mid-term elections in 2007.
If convicted, Arroyo could face life in prison.
Travis Brecher, Reuters
