Results are out, mass protests planned

The final results in Russia's parliamentary election are out.<br/> The ruling United Russia party has won by a slim majority with 49.32 percent of the vote.<br/> This shows the growing discontent with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's rule and the political system he has dominated for 12 years.<br/> Russian opposition groups are taking to the streets against what they call a mass election fraud.<br/> They are calling on thousands to join them in a peaceful mass protest planned for Saturday.<br/> (SOUNDBITE) MOSCOW RESIDENT ANDREI TATISHCHEV SAYING (Russian):<br/> "These ribbons symbolise another eruption of people's outrage against what was happening during all of these days, all this lawlessness of authorities."<br/> On December 5, 5000 people participated in the largest opposition protest in Moscow in years.<br/> About 1000 people have been detained by police since last Sunday but this is not discouraging one protester.<br/> (SOUNDBITE) STUDENT YEVDOKIA SAYING (Russian):<br/> "Yes, I will go tomorrow, and I realise quite clearly that I might not come back home, but I will still go because my heart aches for Russia."<br/> Thousands are expected to turn up with over 30,000 people confirming their attendance of the demo on Facebook.<br/> Marie-Claire Fennessy, Reuters
