A week of protests in Russia.
Anger over an election -- which international monitors and the United States found fault with -- unleashed years of pent-up frustration with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his tight political controls.
Now President President Dmitry Medvedev is announcing that there will be investigations into allegations of voter fraud.
Some say he had little choice.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MOSCOW PEDESTRIAN DILSHOT BURKHONOV, SAYING:
"He had no other choice, because he has brought everything to extremes. If he didn't make a decision to do it, trust in him would have absolutely fallen, which it practically has. I would say in many cities, the people don't trust him at all. I mean all of those who I know and talk to."
Others argue that it is not enough
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) MOSCOW RESIDENT TATIANA, SAYING:
"I think it would be more correct if it wasn't simply a vote recount at first, but probably it would be better to organize a new State Duma election, to do it once again."
Rival parties and election observers say the official results were inflated by violations such as ballot-box stuffing, and allegations of fraud have spread on the Internet along with calls to turn out for protests.
Russian opposition parties are now calling for another protest for Dec. 24, by which time, they demand an official recount of last Sunday's poll.
Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters
