Ships Resume Travel to China's Guaneli Port after Fatal Attacks

Four countries, including China, have agreed to patrol the area. It comes after an incident in which two Chinese ships were attacked in October.<br /><br />Chinese merchant ships arrived at Guanlei Port from Thailand over the weekend.<br /><br />It was the first batch of Chinese merchant ships returning from Thailand after four countries' joint police patrols started.<br /><br />[Ye Chao, Ship Crew]:<br />"We took farm and sideline produce and fruits to Thailand, and have brought Thai goods and Burmese transit cargo back."<br /><br />China, Laos, Burma and Thailand made a pact to patrol the Mekong River so that merchant ships could travel safely.<br /><br />A positioning system has been installed in every ship, making it easier for maritime authorities to track them.<br /><br />Besides returned ships, there were also many merchant ships loaded with fruits, building materials and farm and sideline produce. The ships left the port on Sunday.<br /><br />The patrols come at Chinese urging, following an October incident in which two Chinese ships were attacked, with 13 fatalities.<br /><br />After that, China put a temporary halt to shipping in the so-called "Golden Triangle" region of Southeast Asia, known for a thriving drug trade.
