An unexpected New Year present for Japanese police.<br/> A member of the doomsday Aum Shinrikyo cult, Makoto Hirata turns himself in after 16 years on the run.<br/> Hirata is wanted in connection with the abduction and murder of chief clerk Kiyoshi Kariya from this neighbourhood in 1995.<br/> The 68-year-old Kariya's body was never found despite an extensive search by police.<br/> He had been trying to get a relative to leave the cult and was reportedly being threatened by cult members.<br/> Hirata, now 46, has told police his only involvement in Kariya's abduction was driving the car used for the kidnapping.<br/> Kariya's son says he just wants the truth.<br/> (SOUNDBITE)(Japanese) MINORU KARIYA, SON OF KIYOSHI KARIYA, SAYING:<br/> "I just want him to tell us everything he knows, the whole truth."<br/> Shoko Asahara, the cult's founder - real name Chizuo Matsumoto - had a death sentence confirmed in 2006.<br/> Aum Shinrikyo was behind simultaneous attacks with sarin nerve gas on five Tokyo subway trains in 1995 which killed 12 poeple and made thousands ill.<br/> Sunita Rappai, Reuters
