Rough waves crash against Italy's Giglio Island - and the stricken hull of the Costa Concordia cruise ship.

Bad weather has again halted rescue and salvage effort, and tangled parts of the floating protective barrier around the boat.

Crews were hoping to start pumping more than 2,300 tonnes of diesel fuel from the capsized ship this week before it leaks into the water.

But they can't begin until the sea calms.

Pumping the fuel could take up to a month to complete, while the actual salvage operations may span almost a year.

Crews are also watching the hull's movements as it shifts in rough waters.

Jessica Gray, Reuters
