EDITOR PLEASE NOTE, EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION

A large plume of black smoke can be seen over the Syrian city of Homs on Wednesday (February 15).

There was a report of an explosion that hit a major oil pipeline with residents saying they can see smoke rising.

Reuters cannot independently varify if the smoke seen in the images is from the explosion at the pipeline.

The pipeline, which runs from the Rumeilan fields in the eastern Syriac Desert to the Homs refinery, one of two in the country, has been hit several times before during the 11-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad.

It was not clear what caused the explosion.

Footage from an activist's camera - which has been feeding live pictures from Homs via the internet - showed a dense plume of smoke rising behind houses in Baba Amr.

The authorities have accused "terrorist saboteurs" of attacking the pipeline while opposition activists said the military, which began firing shells, mortar rounds and rockets into Baba Amr on Feb 3, hit the pipeline by mistake.
