He was immediately arrested and later pleaded guilty to extensive corruption charges.<br /><br />He was accused of running a multi-billion dollar smuggling operation in Xiamen in the 1990s, bribing officials and evading billions of dollars of government taxes.<br /><br />Lai fled to Canada in 1999 and sought asylum. Canada rejected his claim and deported him after assurances from Beijing he would not be tortured or given the death penalty.<br /><br />But the decision was controversial as Lai's accountant and brother both mysteriously died in a Chinese prison and the Canadian court was not given their autopsy reports.
