North Korea's state-run television released footage on Sunday of a mass memorial rally for late leader Kim Jong-il.

The rally was held to mark the 100th day since Kim's death in December last year.

KRT said around 150 thousand people attended the event - among them Kim's successor, Kim Jong-un.

Before the rally, North Korea's young leader visited Kumsusan Palace of the Sun to observe a moment of silence in front of a portrait of his father.

Experts believe that the untested new leader, who has been groomed for power since 2009, will rule with the aid of a close coterie that includes his uncle and aunt, at least in the early stages of his reign.

Travis Brecher, Reuters
