EDITORS NOTE - THIS VIDEO CONTAINS GRAPHIC VIOLENCE

It's Jake Gyllenhaal as you've never seen him before.

After his standout performances in "Donnie Darko" and Oscar-nominated turn in "Brokeback Mountain", the actor gets evil.

In the music video for French band The Shoes, Gyllenhaal is a serial killer targeting hipsters in London's uber trendy east end.

Band members Guillaume Briere and Benjamin Lebeau say the actor was the consummate professional.

SOUNDBITE: Guillaume Briere From The Shoes, saying (French):

"He's impressive in the way he captured the essence of the role. I mean, he didn't have to do a thousand takes, because he was very quickly in the moment, with the right expressions."

The music video for the single "Time To Dance" sees Gyllenhaal going to night clubs and afterparties slashing and killing his way through them.

SOUNDBITE: Guillaume Briere From The Shoes, saying (English):

"People ask questions about this video, and people wonder, 'What's this?'. We don't play music on the video, we are not in the video, it's a bit mysterious, you know? And I think it's a good way to touch people."

The video has been criticised for its violent nature, including one scene where Gyllenhaal brutally murders people with a fencing sword.

But Briere says they were aiming for beauty, not braun.

SOUNDBITE: Guillaume Briere From The Shoes, saying (English):

"We just want to make a beautiful movie, you know? And this is a 'film noir', it's not as violent as that."

Gyllenhaal's next movie "End of Watch" is set for release in September.

The Shoes' single and their album "Crack My Bones" are out now.

Cindy Martin, Reuters
