Rescuers in China have stepped up efforts to reach 12 missing workers, trapped deep in a mine in northeastern China since last Friday.<br/> <br />Emergency crews are pumping water out of the flooded coal mine.<br/> <br />A total of 70 miners were working in the mine when they were pinned down by water pouring in.<br/> <br />Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said 58 workers managed to escape.<br/> <br />Local authorities said rescuers have pumped out some 15,000 cubic metres of water, but 20,000 metres remain in the mine.<br/> <br />China's mines are the deadliest in the world, due to lax safety standards and a rush to feed demand from a robust economy.<br/> <br />In 2010, 2,433 people died in coal mine accidents here, though this was an improvement on the toll of 2,631 a year earlier.<br/> <br />Travis Brecher, Reuters
