Arab League in Syria protection plea

Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elraby announces the decision to call on the U.N. Security Council to take immediate action to protect Syrian civilians.

The statement was issued at the end of a meeting of Arab League foreign ministers in Cairo.

The Arab League is also trying to gather together Syria's opposition groups to unite their visions for the nation's future.

Fears are growing that disunity among the groups could see Syria slide into sectarian conflict much as Iraq did after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Inside Syria, the U.N.'s truce monitoring team says the additional observers it's expecting are due to arrive any time now.

SOUNDBITE: NEERAJ SINGH, SPOKESMAN FOR FIRST U.N. MONITORING TEAM, SAYING (English):

"We are expecting new military observers to arrive today, tonight. They might have arrived by now."

The U.N. has authorised up to 300 observers in total.

At the moment there are less than 20 trying to oversee a ceasefire both sides appear to be largely ignoring.

Paul Chapman, Reuters
