Stray dogs find a home with soldiers

A dog rescue shelter in Afghanistan is working to place animals with owners... most of whom are soldiers returning home after tours of duty.<br/> <br />The Nowzad clinic vaccinates local dogs before they are shipped out to their new homes abroad.<br/> <br />For many soldiers returning from war, mental health is major concern.<br/> <br />But thanks to the help of these furry friends , Nowzad founder Pen Farthing says soldiers may have a jump start on their treatment.<br/> <br />(SOUNDBITE) (English) FOUNDER OF BRITISH CHARITY NOWZAD, AN ANIMAL SHELTER, PEN FARTHING, SAYING:<br/> <br />"Dogs have been proven to be for post-traumatic stress treatment they send dogs in the hospitals to the veteran associations and so actually the soldiers who have adopted a dog over here are already addressing those post traumatic stress moments."<br/> <br />It's a good deal for the dogs as well.<br/> <br />Besides getting them off the streets... where stray dogs are often shot or poisoned.... they received a shelter, health care and a plate of delicious potato stew every day.<br/> <br />For man and beast-- a match made in Afghanistan.<br/> <br />Julie Noce, Reuters
